Installation & Replacement

How Replacement Windows Are Measured

A tape measure across the visible glass is not enough to order a replacement window. The installer needs to understand the existing frame, wall construction, squareness, sill and the installation approach being proposed.

The measurement depends on what will remain

An insert replacement fits within a suitable retained frame, so the available opening is smaller. Full-frame replacement removes more of the old assembly and allows the rough opening to be inspected.

The scope must be decided before final dimensions are confirmed. Otherwise the measured size may not match the work eventually expected at the opening.

Visible opening

Useful for an initial conversation, but not enough for final ordering.

Frame condition

Determines whether an insert approach is reasonable or broader removal is needed.

Wall depth

Affects jamb extensions, interior trim and the relationship to exterior finishes.

Squareness

Multiple widths, heights and diagonals show whether the opening is distorted.

Several dimensions tell the story

Width and height should be checked at more than one point because older openings may not be square. Diagonals help reveal racking, while sill level and frame depth affect support and finishing.

Exterior cladding, brick returns, interior jamb extensions and trim all influence how the new unit sits in the wall. Large or joined windows may also need structural and handling review.

Final measure is a commitment point

Operating direction, frame colour, glass package, screens and hardware should be confirmed alongside dimensions. A correct size with the wrong handing is still the wrong window.

Photos and preliminary measurements help with an early conversation, but custom windows should be ordered from a project-specific final measure by the responsible installer.

Confirm these details before work begins

  • What part of the old frame will remain?
  • Are the sill and surrounding materials sound?
  • Who is responsible for the final measure?
  • Have handing, glass and finishing details been confirmed?
