Combination Windows for Light, View and Airflow

Bring fixed and operating windows together in one coordinated opening. The right arrangement can preserve a broad view while putting fresh-air control where it is useful.

Start with what each section needs to do

A combination window uses two or more window sections together. A large fixed pane may provide the main view while casements, awnings, hung windows or sliders provide ventilation beside it, above it or below it.

The arrangement should not be chosen from appearance alone. Furniture placement, reachable hardware, outdoor clearance and the direction of common breezes all affect which sections should open.

Windows Hamilton plans the complete opening: operating style, glass area, sightlines, frame divisions, exterior proportions and installation details. That produces a more deliberate result than selecting several unrelated windows and hoping they work together.

Example only: the proportions and opening styles can be tailored to the wall and room.

Proportion Matters

Make the divisions look intentional

The frame lines become part of the architecture. Their spacing should relate to the room and the exterior elevation.

From inside

Protect the main view

Centre mullions, sash rails and screens can interrupt a sightline. We consider where people sit or stand before settling the layout.

  • Furniture and counter heights
  • Handle reach
  • Privacy and glare
From outside

Balance the elevation

Window divisions should make sense beside doors, roof lines and neighbouring openings. Equal sections are not always the most balanced choice.

  • Consistent head and sill lines
  • Frame colour and trim
  • Symmetry where it helps

What should be confirmed before ordering

Where should ventilation come from?

We identify the most useful operating sections and confirm that an open sash will not conflict with a walkway, deck, landscaping or interior fixture.

How will the opening carry the load?

Wide assemblies require suitable framing, joining and support. The existing opening must be assessed rather than assuming every layout fits.

Which glass specification fits the exposure?

Orientation, pane size, safety requirements and room comfort can influence the glass package. The window style name alone does not answer those questions.

How will water and air be managed?

Flashing, perimeter sealing, sill conditions and exterior finishing are part of the window system. A good product still depends on careful installation.

Design the Whole Opening

Have a wide or multi-section window to replace?

Send Windows Hamilton a clear photo from inside and outside, approximate overall dimensions and a note about which sections you want to open. We can help narrow the arrangement before the site assessment.
